Diwali: A Festival of Lights and Unity in Central Wisconsin

ROTHSCHILD, Wis. (WSAW) - Diwali, the traditional Hindu Festival of Lights, is a vibrant celebration marking the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and a joyous expression of freedom and creativity.

As Swati Biswas, President of the Indian Society of Central Wisconsin, puts it, "Diwali is a chance to showcase our beautiful culture and share it with the people of central Wisconsin."

The annual Diwali event in the Wausau area, led by Biswas, has seen remarkable growth each year. While rooted in religious tradition for Hindus, Diwali has gracefully evolved into a holiday embraced by all.

Biswas emphasizes that many mistakenly view it as overly religious and solemn, making it seem inaccessible.

"I think people think that it's...very religious and solemn, and therefore not open or accessible to people, and maybe not as much fun as it actually is, but we're all about fun," she explains.

Indeed, the celebration in Rothschild was a testament to this, featuring an array of traditional Indian food, lively dances, captivating music, and even a vibrant fashion show.

Robyn Tanger, initially among those who thought Diwali was not for her, quickly found herself immersed in the festivities after being welcomed by Biswas and the community.

She expressed her gratitude, stating, "I'm just very thankful that the Indian Society here in Central Wisconsin holds a festival for the entire community so that we can be introduced to other cultural traditions."

The celebration was a mosaic of people from all ethnicities and backgrounds, proving Biswas's point that the holiday is truly more enjoyable when shared.

"We see a lot of people who are non-Indians dressing up in ethnic wear. So we just love that people are so welcoming of our culture and so open to it. It makes our hearts really warm and burst with pride when we see that," Biswas shared, highlighting the heartwarming community spirit.

Although this year's Diwali celebration in Rothschild has concluded, it promises to return next year for those who missed out.
