40-Year-Old Gundam Mecha Gets the Ultimate Return With New Master Grade Gunpla Release

Debuting nearly four decades ago, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ was the second sequel in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, greatly expanding the Universal Century continuity. Now, its ultimate mecha is joining the premiere line of Gundam plastic model kits, and it's set to come out just in time.

Bandai has revealed the upcoming MG 1/100 Full Armor ZZ Gundam Ver. Ka brings the powerful mecha to life like never before, with this coming after the model kit was teased. Part of a special line of Master Grade Gunpla, it's full of articulation that truly recreates the heavy armor of the animation model. Set to come out next year, the new model kit finally puts the overlooked mobile suit back in the limelight.

Gundam ZZ's Coolest Mecha Finally Joins Bandai's Master Grade Gunpla Model Kit Line

The MG 1/100 Full Armor ZZ Gundam Ver.Ka model kit is a recreation of the ultimate mecha from Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, with the name denoting the line itself. Bandai's Version Katoki model kits are supervised by Hajime Katoki, who's worked on several entries in the franchise (including the iconic New Mobile Report Gundam Wing). Meant to showcase the versatility of the mobile suit in the anime, the kit recreates its many armor configurations without being too bulky. This includes the ability to remove the armor and display the kit as the Enhanced ZZ Gundam. There's also a ton of articulation, particularly in the forearms, with this accounting for a mechanism that allows it to hold the massive Double Beam Rifle. Other weapons include the Hyper Mega Cannon, beam sabers and shields, with the model kit also having several stickers and decals that accentuate its animation accuracy.

A set of fingertip parts and lead wire complete the kit, allowing for expert craftsmanship in displaying the piece. The full range of features and accessories haven't been shown yet for the MG 1/100 Full Armor ZZ Gundam Ver.Ka mobile suit, but these will likely be revealed in the coming months. It will be sold for 12,540 yen, or around US$86, and it's expected to come out in stores in February 2026. This price is rather ironic given that the anime debuted in 1986, with 2026 marking the 40th anniversary. Gundam ZZ was the sequel to Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, which is now celebrating its own 40th anniversary, making it the third entry in the Universal Century timeline.
