A timeless horror classic boasting a near-flawless Rotten Tomatoes rating arrives on screens today to celebrate Halloween 2025.

The black and white supernatural chiller Dead of Night follows architect Walter Craig (portrayed by Mervyn Johns) as he visits Pilgrim's Farm for a business appointment.

However, upon arriving, Walter experiences an eerie sensation of déjà vu and discovers he has previously dreamt about each person he encounters at the property.

This anthology horror unfolds as he discusses the peculiar occurrences from these dreams, with each individual confessing to having witnessed "a strange and unexplainable event" themselves.

Despite being released eight decades ago, Dead of Night remains a cherished favourite amongst horror enthusiasts, who can catch the film today, Friday, October 31, at 4.45pm on Film4.

The 1945 production has garnered critical acclaim throughout the decades, securing an impressive 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

"A potential outright winner in the 'best horror film ever' stakes," one reviewer remarked.

Another enthusiast wrote: "It's brilliantly creepy, with frightening orchestral music to boot; each component gradually gets weirder, more bloodcurdling, and undeniably more creative."

Google reviewers are equally enthusiastic about the picture, with numerous viewers declaring it "one of the best horror movies you'll ever see".

One fan branded it an "absolute classic", whilst another commented: "If this doesn't scare you, check for a pulse."

One viewer commented: "Well ahead of its time and the themes within the film spawned several memorable horror films in the following decades. Quite remarkable."

Another user recommended: "Outstanding British horror film, first class cast well told individual stories. Highly recommended,".

Dead of Night features actor Mervyn Johns as architect Walter Craig, Michael Redgrave as Maxwell Frere, Roland Culver as Eliot Foley, and Sally Ann Howes, known for her role in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, as Sally O'Hara.
