MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (WGN) -- A severe thunderstorm with strong winds tore the roof off a northwest suburban apartment building on Saturday evening.
Storms passed through Chicagoland, bringing high winds and heavy rain. Several warnings and advisories were issued throughout the day.
During the storms, the roof was torn off a four-story apartment building in the 700 block of Huntington Commons Road in Mount Prospect just before 5 p.m.
"We did have a lot of calls in the area of powerlines down," Tom Wang, Mount Prospect Fire Deputy Chief, said. "You can say a quick microburst came through and took down a lot of powerlines and took a roof off."
Dramatic video from the Citizen app shows the back side of the building with extensive damage and debris scattered all over the ground.
Now, looking through the window of a top-floor unit, an exercise machine is still visibly standing but beyond it, the sky can be seen as part of the roof is completely torn off.
Officials say there are 60 total units in the apartment building. All residents were evacuated safely.
Wang says crews are working to determine whether the building is structurally safe, which is why everyone was evacuated.
Residents are currently gathered at Rec Plex as they wait for the next steps.
