Deadly Garland crash leads to intoxication manslaughter charge

One person is dead after they were T-boned by 18-year-old Alan Ernaldo Marmol Melendez early Wednesday morning.

As of Thursday afternoon, the victim has not been identified by authorities.

Melendez is charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Garland Police responded to the crash around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday off South Garland Ave just north of I-635.

"We received the call of a major crash that happened in the intersection of Garland Avenue and Kingsley Road," Lt. Pedro Barineau, spokesperson for Garland Police, said.

Investigators said Melendez was the driver of a Cadillac Escalade.

"We learned that there was a black SUV traveling northbound and a Nissan going eastbound through the intersection. Based on what we found is the vehicle traveling northbound, a black Escalade was traveling at a high rate of speed," Barineau said. "The speed was so great that the vehicle that struck that car went an additional 500 feet past the intersection."

The victim, according to the affidavit, was driving a Nissan X-terra. According to the affidavit, Melendez "was racing another truck when the crash happened."

Melendez allegedly told police the victim was going to turn north onto S Garland Avenue. He told the officer at the scene that he hit the right side of the vehicle, causing the Nissan to roll over and burst into flames on the railroad track, which runs parallel to S Garland.

Melendez said he was racing a Chevy Silverado truck. Police said he later said the race started at the intersection of S Garland Ave and S Shiloh Road but "didn't know the person that was driving the other truck."

"There was not another vehicle at the scene. However, we are still looking into that possibility," Barineau said.

According to the affidavit, Melendez told police he had a red light. When asked how fast he thought he was driving, Melendez allegedly told police, "70, 60" miles per hour. The speed limit on that stretch of road is 45 miles per hour.

The crash site is located less than a mile from S Shiloh Road.

According to that same document, Melendez confessed to having two alcoholic beverages before getting behind the wheel to drive his friend home. Melendez claims he drank two Four Lokos, a beverage known for its high alcohol content.

"A blood draw was actually submitted, and so we will use that as evidence against the person," Barineau said.

Police say his friend suffered minor injuries and won't face any charges.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Garland Police Department at (972) 485-4840.
