The Big Ten released its weekly award list for Week 14 of the regular season and the Maryland Terrapins and the Wisconsin Badgers split the awards. Wisconsin's John Tonje was named Big Ten Player of the Week and Maryland's Derik Queen was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Tonje had an outstanding week for the Badgers. He posted an incredible stat line in Wisconsin's win at Purdue on Saturday, finishing with 32 points, six rebounds, and three assists. He is the nation's only player to post multiple 30-point games against top 10 opponents this season, which came against Arizona and Purdue.
This is the third time Tonje has been named Big Ten Player of the Week. The last Badger to earn the award was Tonje back in November of last year. It should be interesting to see how Tonje can play against a tough slate for the Badgers this week. Wisconsin hosts Illinois on Tuesday and Oregon on Saturday.
Queen also had quite a week for the Terps, averaging 21.0 points and 12.0 rebounds as Maryland beat Nebraska and Iowa. His 24 point performance was particularly impressive on the road against the Huskers, who have protected home court well so far this season. Maryland continues to be one of the hottest teams in the league.
This is the fifth time Queen has earned Freshman of the Week honors. The last Maryland freshman to earn the award was Queen just a week ago. We'll get to see how Queen performs against Maryland's upcoming schedule, which begins with USC at home on Thursday.
Congratulations are in order for both players. Don't be surprised if they show back up on this list given how they have played to date either. With March Madness around the corner, Tonje and Queen are proving they can rise to the occasion. Can they keep up this momentum?
