What we know about 5 Iowa National Guard soldiers ambushed in Syria

JOHNSTON, Iowa -- (Iowa State Capital Bureau) -- The five Iowa National Guard soldiers ambushed Saturday in Syria were among an estimated 250 serving in that country, Iowa Army National Guard Major General Stephen Osborn said Saturday evening during a news conference at Camp Dodge in Johnston.

Fatalies -- 3

Two Iowa National Guard soldiers and a civilian interpreter (not from Iowa) who was assisting them.

One had "superficial" injuries, according to Maj. Gen. Osborn, and two had "significant" injuries.

Mission of service in Syria

Maj. Gen. Osborn said the soldiers were performing counterterrorism duties.

Identities of Iowa National Guard soldiers involved

The Iowa National Guard said that it will release the names of the victims on Sunday at 5 p.m.
