Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has highlighted a 28-billion-euro military modernization programme, inaugurating a new "bioclimatic" facade at the Ministry of National Defense headquarters.

The Prime Minister joined military chiefs and former ministers to unveil the energy-efficient façade, which envelops the main building, known as Greece's "Pentagon."

The project was designed by sculptor Costas Varotsos and financed by a donation from Metlen Energy & Metals, led by its chairman and CEO, Evangelos Mytilineos.

The new structure faces a monument honoring more than 121,000 Greek armed forces members killed in battle.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Mitsotakis said the government is undertaking "the most ambitious modernization program in the history of the armed forces," with a budget expected to exceed 28 billion euros over the next 12 years.

He cited the acquisition of new Rafale fighter jets, F-16 Vipers, and the upcoming delivery of F-35s, stating the Hellenic Air Force is acquiring "strategic deterrent superiority."

Mr. Mitsotakis also noted the modernization of the Hellenic Navy with four new Belharra frigates.

"Defending our homeland is not only about the power of our weapons but also the power of our heritage and identity," Mr. Mitsotakis said, praising the new facade and its proximity to the monument.

The upgrades coincide with the construction of a new cyber warfare headquarters next to the main building.
