1 week from Election Day: races heat up, voters cast early ballots

With one week to go before municipal general elections, some voters in the region are already casting their ballots.

"So much of what happens, happens on the small level, like the local government level," said Cayla McNally as she stopped by the satellite elections office in West Philadelphia on Tuesday morning.

Action News spotted several people in West Philadelphia turning in their ballots at the drop-off box outside the office.

"It is a big election," said Michael Tucker as he brought in paperwork for a family member. "It's very important. We're retaining Supreme Court judges. We're retaining municipal court judges."

According to the non-partisan nonprofit organization, Committee of Seventy, more than 10,000 races are happening across Pennsylvania for the municipal general election.

"Local school boards in Philadelphia, the district attorney's race, and city controller are on the ballot this year," said Committee of Seventy President and CEO Lauren Cristella.

There's also the tight governor's race in New Jersey.

"A lot of pollsters and pundits are treating it as a referendum on the Trump administration," said Cristella.

Also getting national attention- and ad dollars-is the retention race for three Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices.

"This is definitely the most money we've seen spent in a race like this," said Cristella, "What we're seeing now is the hyper-partisanship that has just permeated all of our politics."

"It's a lot at stake. A lot of things go through the State Supreme Court," said Philadelphia City Commissioners Chairman Omar Sabir, adding that the issues have motivated some voters to get their ballots in.

Tuesday was the last day that Pennsylvania voters could request mail-in ballots. About 100,000 Philadelphians requested mail-in ballots. Roughly 50,000 had turned in their ballots as of Tuesday morning.

Municipal elections typically see lower voter turnout; however, leaders hope this election will exceed 20% voter turnout. They emphasize to voters that every election is important.

Whether you drop off your ballot, mail it, or vote in person, all ballots are due on Election Day, November 4.

The Committee of Seventy offers resources for voters, including a personalized breakdown of ballots in individual areas. You can access the Interactive Voter Guide here.
