There are plenty of strange creatures in the Hudson Valley, but few come close to one incredible animal hiding in the waters of the lower Hudson River.
Over the years, many land-loving species have captured our attention, including adorable otters, frolicking beavers, and even bears lounging on the SUNY New Paltz campus... but it's an entirely different world under the water's surface.
The Hudson River is hiding more than a few secrets, many of which are thanks to the fact that the river is directly connected with the Atlantic Ocean. That means fascinating marine life like seahorses and even harbor seals have been spotted in the area known as the Hudson Estuary (below).
While seahorses and harbor seals might be easier to spot from the surface, another unique animal is hiding in the bottom of the river, specifically in southern areas of the river that contain more saltwater. Its list of characteristics is mind-boggling.
Recently, the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, an organization (and boat) dedicated to the upkeep and health of the Hudson River, took to Facebook to share some information on an animal that sounds like it was created in a game of Mad Libs: the oyster toadfish.
Described as "soft and slimy with wart-like fringes and flaps on their enormous head", the oyster toadfish is far more than just an interesting face. Not only can its jaws crush oyster shells, but it carries non-fatal venom in its fin... and they can "talk".
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation , the oyster toadfish, which are already unique, "make a foghorn sound" during mating season to attract potential partners... A true renaissance creature.
While this spectacular fish belongs in New York State, other, equally-strange animals are uninvited guests. Check out some of the more intimidating threats below.
