Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare opens first-of-its-kind crisis center

Blue Ridge Behavioral HealthCare held an open house Wednesday for its new Crisis Receiving Center - a first-of-its-kind facility in the Roanoke region.

It is planned to open for services at the end of the month. The facility will offer access to mental health and substance use care and an alternative to the emergency room for mental health needs with 24 hours a day, seven days a week service.

The new Crisis Receiving Center offers the Roanoke Valley a no-wrong-door access to mental health and substance use care; operating much like a hospital emergency department that accepts all walk-ins, ambulance, fire and police drop-offs, according to news release from the company.

The center is a local alternative to the emergency room for behavioral health needs where individuals can get access to care more rapidly in a calm, supportive environment.

Division Director Allison Taylor said the center "is an urgent care for behavioral health needs and is a valuable asset and resource to our community."

The new 23 Hour Crisis Stabilization Unit will utilize de-escalation, safety planning, short-term individual and family therapy as well as provide individuals with nursing and psychiatric assessments and care coordination.

Appropriate referrals to community providers and peers support will also be provided for individuals, according to the release.
