Former Boston Bruins goalie retires at 39

The long-time NHL goalie had two stints with the Bruins organization (2011-13, 2016-18) and served as an emergency goalie for the 2011 Stanley Cup run, though he never dressed for a game in that postseason. Originally acquired from the Wild at the 2011 trade deadline for Jeff Penner and Mikko Lehtonen, Khudobin spent the remainder of that season and (most of the next one) in Providence.

Khudobin broke through in Boston in 2012-13 following Tim Thomas' retirement. He served as Tuukka Rask's backup for the lockout-shortened season, then signed with Carolina in the summer of 2013. A free agent again in 2016, Khudobin re-signed in Boston on a two-year deal, once again backing Rask.

All told, Khudobin went 33-16-9 across his four seasons with Boston, posting a .914 save percentage and 2.50 goals against average. He received a Stanley Cup ring for his emergency services in 2011, but Khudobin's name isn't engraved on the Cup itself, as he didn't qualify.

Khudobin last played in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2023, and had since appeared in two Russian leagues. At 39 with 260 NHL games under his belt, Khudobin is ready to call it quits.
