Residents 'frightened' as piles of raw meat dumped across Darlington neighbourhood

Large quantities of meat have been discovered on several occasions in and around the community garden between Caithness Road and Annandale, prompting growing concern among residents and councillors.

Councillor Jake Bartch said members had been raising complaints for more than a year after multiple piles of meat - including what he described as "nearly a whole pig" were found strewn across the area.

He said: "We have no idea who is doing it, but this has started to become a regular occurrence now.

"The main concern is not only that it could be consumed by dogs, but the sheer amount of meat that is left."

Cllr Bartch said that in one incident more than 100 raw chicken wings were discovered, leaving families fearful that children or pets could come into contact with contaminated meat.

The Councillor added: "Residents are frightened because kids play in this area.

"They are genuinely concerned the meat could be laced with something dangerous.

"Many dog walkers have expressed their concerns and are scared in case their dogs eat it. It's an environmental issue - the main concern is just the sheer quantity of raw meat that is found."

While Cllr Bartch believes the individual responsible may think they are helping wildlife such as feeding foxes, he warned that leaving raw meat out is "unhygienic" and risks attracting pests.

In a social media post in January this year, the councillor shared that fish guts and sausage rolls were found dumped in the community garden.

The post said: "Someone is regularly discarding food waste in Whinfield.

"This is not only unhygienic and could attract pests, it also causes much worry among residents, especially dog walkers.

"We are sure the person who is doing this has good motivations, or at least we hope so, and is perhaps only trying to feed hungry animals over winter. But this shouldn't be happening.

"We know residents are concerned about this and we have reported it to the council."

In the event of fly tipping incidents, a spokesperson from Darlington Borough Council said: "Darlington Borough Council has an online form for reporting fly-tipping. Visit www.darlington.gov.uk/reportit to report a fly tip in your area."
