Shoppers in Darlington have been alerted to the health and safety dangers associated with fake products.

Trading standards officials have released a joint alert with Darlington Borough Council regarding fraudulent items being sold both on the high street and online.

During the previous year, the council confiscated multiple bags of counterfeit fragrances in the town centre featuring packaging crafted to imitate authentic brands.

The council's trading standards department revealed that perfumes have previously been discovered to contain unidentified and potentially dangerous chemicals which may trigger skin irritation, allergic reactions and even toxic effects.

Dawn Taylor, trading standards officer, said: "We know, for many Darlington residents, it's a tough time when they are trying to save money and spend less, but buying counterfeit goods doesn't save you any money. In fact, it can cost you.

"This is because goods are often of poor quality, they don't function correctly, don't last very long, and most importantly, they can pose health and safety risks."

CCTV operators, Darlington police and trading standards officials are collaborating to track down and arrest rogue traders in the run-up to Christmas, seizing and removing illegal merchandise which may present dangers to buyers.

Customers have also been advised to verify that children's toys are genuine, as fake versions may create choking risks due to not being manufactured according to proper regulations. Ms Taylor continued: "We advise people to buy from reputable retailers, whether that's from a physical shop or an online supplier. It's that guarantee of quality that you get when you buy from someone you know."

Council bosses have issued a fresh warning urging locals to remain wary of cold callers, doorstep sellers and email fraudsters.

Jim Garner, cabinet member for stronger communities, explained: "Fraudsters and counterfeit traders do not care about your wellbeing or your finances - they only care about making money. Buying fake goods not only risks your health and safety but also supports organised crime. By staying alert and reporting suspicious activity, you can help protect yourself and others in our community.

"I would ask people to share these messages and advice with family and friends, especially if they are particularly vulnerable."
