St. Louis mom waited hours to call 911 as daughter died, cops say

ST. LOUIS -- A St. Louis mother was charged Tuesday with two felonies after her 13-year-old daughter died from a diabetic episode.

Charges say Lori N. Grayson, 42, waited for hours to call 911 and even left to go to the store while her child became lethargic and her blood sugar spiked. Eventually, charges say, her daughter vomited, urinated on herself and became unresponsive.

"Grayson's failure to seek timely medical treatment for (her daughter's) diabetes emergency on December 3, 2023, ultimately caused (her) death," police Det. Julie Johnson wrote in a probable cause statement.

Grayson, who lives on Cottage Avenue in north St. Louis, was ordered to be held without bond. She does not yet have an attorney listed in charging documents.

On Dec. 3, 2023, police were called to St. Louis Children's Hospital for a report of child abuse.

The 13-year-old girl, who is not named in charging documents, had died from diabetic ketoacidosis -- a life-threatening complication of diabetes. Grayson told investigators that her daughter had been diabetic since the age of eight.

At around 9 a.m. that day, Grayson said the girl had complained she wasn't feeling well.

Grayson said she'd noticed her daughter's blood sugar was too high, so she gave her 40 units of insulin multiple times. Court documents say doctors recommended 10-20 units at a time.

At around 2 p.m., the girl began vomiting, and the mother said she considered calling an ambulance.

Instead, she left the home to go to the store, court records say, though Grayson later told investigators she never left. In a 911 call, she told dispatchers she'd left to go to her sister's house but that her daughter didn't come because her blood sugar was too high, court records say.

At around 8 p.m., Grayson called for an ambulance. Her daughter was urinating on herself and vomiting.

The teen died about an hour later at the hospital, court records say.

A review of the child's medical records showed that her diabetes was considered "poorly controlled" by medical professionals, charges say. She had been hospitalized previously for ketoacidosis and missed several doctor's appointments.

Social workers and medical professionals told detectives that they offered Grayson virtual appointments and tried to incentivize her to bring her daughter to appointments with reminders, gift cards and gas cards, but she would not come.

When she did, she didn't have required logs of her daughter's glucose numbers so they could help monitor her condition, court records say.

At least twice, Grayson was reported to child welfare officials for her failure to care for her daughter's medical condition, court records say.

Grayson was charged Tuesday with two counts of abuse or neglect of a child, resulting in death.
