Two people are in police custody following a shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, leaving multiple injured and some feared dead.
Police and emergency services responded to reports of gunmen firing at a crowd near the beach just before 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Social media footage shows two men standing on a footbridge linking Campbell Parade to the Bondi Pavilion, firing shots into the crowd as people screamed and ran for cover.
In one video, a bystander is seen bravely confronting and disarming one of the gunmen. Several victims were seen lying injured on the grass at North Bondi, while others were loaded into ambulances as onlookers tried to assist.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of casualties, but NSW Police confirmed that two people have been taken into custody.
"Two people are in police custody at Bondi Beach; however, the police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area. Please obey ALL police directions. Do not cross police lines," the force said in a statement.
"Attention media - please share our message for members of the public to avoid Bondi Beach area as the police operation continues," it said in another post.
"We are still asking people in the area to take shelter until we can determine what is happening. We have media officer en route to scene, more information when confirmed."
Hanukkah, also spelled Chanukah, is a Jewish festival that celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the 2nd century BCE, following the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire. It is sometimes called the Festival of Lights.
