Taylor Swift fans, known as Swifties, are responding to the booing at the pop star at the Super Bowl on Sunday.
Newsweek reached out via email to a Swift representative and New Orleans' Caesars Superdome, where the game was played, for comment.
Swift attended the NFL's biggest game of the year to support her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and his team as they faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles. But Swift did not receive a warm welcome from some fans in the Super Bowl LIX audience.
Many fans and social media users have said that they felt uncomfortable watching the singer getting booed by a large number of male fans, with some calling the incident misogynistic.
In a clip shared on X (formerly Twitter), fans are heard booing the 14-time Grammy-winning artist as her face was shown on the jumbo screen. Swift appears to say, "What's going on?" in response to the noise.
President Donald Trump was quick to hit out at Swift after this sharing several posts about the singer. He wrote, "The only one that has a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got BOOED out of the stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!"
According to reports, Trump himself was greeted with a mixture of cheers and boos at the game.
Swift's fans have been quick to respond to this, not only jumping to the singer's defense but expressing concern that there is a misogynistic or sexist element to the way Swift was treated at the game.
Stephanie McNeal wrote in Glamour: "Since Donald Trump took office, there have been several times I felt chilled by the rapid increase in misogyny seeping in our culture," adding that watching the booing was "a new low."
"I was there at the game," McNeal said. "When Swift's face appeared on the Jumbotron, an almost instant -- and distinctly male - dissent erupted from around me."
McNeal said that the crowd "seemed to delight" in "jeering and heckling her."
Another person who was at the game wrote on Reddit, "I was two suites next to Taylor and even in my suite people were booing her and yes, cheering for Trump. It was even more heartbreaking being so close to her because they were booing her knowing she was right there hearing it. It was indeed very cruel."
Another user on Reddit wrote: "This was a clear manifestation of the misogyny that has been bubbling under the surface of our society for a while now," adding, "This was an attack on Taylor and a warning to us all."
Many of Swift's fans used the incident to highlight her success, pointing out that while Swift was booed in that stadium, she herself sold out the Superdome for three consecutive nights as part of her record-breaking Eras Tour.
The text on a TikTok video, which has been viewed 1.1 million times, read: "My favorite part about the dads brads & chads booing Taylor is that this is the same stadium she sold out 3 nights in a row last year. #staymad."
Stephanie McNeal wrote in Glamour: "The Super Bowl, one of the biggest cultural events in the country, has been reclaimed by Trump and the type of toxic masculinity he appears to be the beacon of."
Serena Williams wrote on X: "I love you @taylorswift13 don't listen to those boo!!"
Given the current state of political polarization, including issues of gender, it is likely that the treatment of prominent female celebrities will continue to generate conversations about sexism and misogyny.
