ShopRite is continuing to roll out artificial intelligence-powered shopping carts in its supermarkets across New Jersey.
By the end of the month, ShopRite of Hunterdon County will make the technology available at stores in Flemington, Clinton and Greenwich, the family-owned grocer announced in a Sept. 11 press release.
Developed by on-demand delivery platform Instacart, Caper Carts aim to make grocery shopping faster and more convenient by allowing shoppers to scan, bag and check out right from their cart.
Equipped with scales, sensors, touchscreens and computer vision, the smart cart offers real-time spending updates and assists with store navigation. Additionally, customers can link their ShopRite Price Plus membership to apply in-store savings and deals.
ShopRite, a subsidiary of Keasbey-based Wakefern Food Corp., began piloting Cart Carts a few months after Instacart's 2021 acquisition of the technology. Since then, dozens of stores have added smart shopping carts as an option for customers.

The Colalillo family also recently introduced Caper Carts at its two Pennsylvania ShopRite stores (Yardley and Bethlehem).
Founded in 1965 by Joseph Colalillo, ShopRite of Hunterdon employs more than 1,300 associates across its five stores. The business is now helmed by the founder's son Joe, who has also served for the past 18 years as chairman of Wakefern.
