An announcers covering the Chicago Cubs game Wednesday managed to jinx a no-hitter in a game in an entirely different time zone.
At New York's Citi Field, Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the Mets. Williams started off the bottom of the ninth strong when he struck out Francisco Lindor. That brought up star outfielder Juan Soto.
As this was all going on, the Cubs were taking on the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field. Cubs announcer Boog Sciambi admitted on the air that he was keeping a close eye on Williams' performance.
"Alright, so, you know what? I'm just gonna go full disclosure," Sciambi said. "It's the top of the fifth. The Cubs, one. The Reds, nothing. But we work in this game, we love the Cubs, we love baseball. Gavin Williams is throwing a no-hitter right now for the Cleveland Guardians. He just struck out Lindor. Nobody throws no-hitters anymore. So with one out in the ninth, he's throwing a no-hitter; and I am currently watching that game while calling this game. And I'm scared that I'm gonna call the play-by-play from that game."
Seventy seconds later, Sciambi broke the news that Soto had just hit a home run off of Williams to end his no-hit bid.
"And now, I'm gonna turn that game off," Sciambi said.
Jim Deshaies, Sciambi's broadcast partner, joked that Sciambi can "jinx a no-hitter from a thousand miles away."
