Prestigious school named among UK's best amidst royal rumours

A prestigious Wiltshire school has been named among the UK's best after links to royalty.

Marlborough College was one of five Wiltshire schools named in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026.

The guide, which includes a fully searchable national database featuring more than 2,000 schools, ranks the best schools in several categories regionally and nationally.

Marlborough College was named the fifth-best independent secondary school in South West England and ranked 112th nationally.

This achievement comes as rumours that Prince George will attend the college heat up.

He is due to change schools in 2026 after attending Lambrook School and The Telegraph has claimed that William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales, may well have settled on Marlborough College as his next destination.

Telegraph columnist Sophia Money-Coutts says a "well-connected friend" has informed her that the matter has been settled after years of speculation.

It would be another feather in the school's cap, following the annual Parent Power Guide mention which is widely acknowledged as "the most authoritative survey of the country's top schools".

The Sunday Times said: "Recognised as the definitive ranking of the UK's top primary and secondary state and independent schools, this guide remains an essential resource for parents seeking the very best in education for their children."

Marlborough's high performance is another feather in its cap after education consultant and former headmaster Rhidian Llewellyn told The Telegraph he thought Marlborough would be a good choice of school for the prince.

He said: "It's well documented that Catherine did not have a happy time at Downe House and, having transferred to Marlborough, she flourished.

"That works strongly in Marlborough's favour. I also think that she'd like to educate the three children in the same school.

"Eton is obviously the most prestigious school in the world, and keeping their heads slightly further under the parapet with Marlborough perhaps makes sense."

Other Wiltshire schools to feature in the Parent Power Guide included South Wilts Grammar School and Bishop Wordsworth's School, both recognised among the top state secondary schools.

St Mary's Calne was named alongside Marlborough College in the best independent secondary schools category, while St Michael's CofE Primary in Aldbourne scored high among the best primary schools.

The guide's editor Helen Davies said: "The educational landscape is testing - budget challenges, rising student mental health issues, special educational needs and an increasingly uncertain future.

"But there is also so much to celebrate from the dedication of teachers who are finding ever more innovative and impactful ways to enrich their students and give them the very best start in life."
