Second rabies case confirmed in a week in Durham after fox attacked person: Deputies

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) -- A week after a fox attack in the Carolina Arbors neighborhood in Durham, a second rabid fox attack was reported by Durham County.

In a press release from the Durham County Sheriff's Office, this fox attack was reported in north Durham near the Voyager Academy campuses on August 6 in the area of Ben Franklin Boulevard.

County health officials urge people to stay away from all wild animals, or any animals showing unusual and dangerous signs of being unwell.

Officials said some signs of a rabid fox include aggression, stumbling, disorientation, and foaming at the mouth.

"Foxes are common to see throughout North Carolina, and although they are typically not dangerous to humans, they are still wild animals and should not be approached," said Durham County Medical and Laboratory Director Dr. Jeffrey Jenks. "They will not usually attack humans unless they are rabid, so if you are attacked by one or see one acting aggressively, it's important to call and report it right away."

County officials ask that if any residents see a fox or animal exhibiting signs of rabies, to call Durham County Animal Control at 919-560-0900. "This number should only be used for potential rabies reporting if an attack has occurred or if signs of rabies are observed," the press release said.

Some of the advice that county officials offer to prevent exposure to rabies includes:

* Avoid feeding foxes, other wild animals or feral cats.

* Secure garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids.

* Feed pets indoors, or remove food promptly after outdoor feeding.

* Remove other potential food sources, such as bird feeders or fallen fruit near trees.

* Close off crawl spaces under sheds, porches, decks, and homes.

* Secure pets or keep them indoors.

If anyone is bitten by a rabid animal, county officials said they should wash wounds immediately with soap and water within 15 minutes to help flush out any virus and seek medical attention immediately at an urgent care facility or the ER.
