On a day of upsets in men's doubles at the Professional Pickleball Association's Veolia Bristol Open, the top-seeded team of Ben Johns and Gabriel Tardio took care of business.

They notched an 11-2, 11-8 quarterfinal victory over Juan Benitz and Travis Rettenmaier at the Bristol Sportsplex on Raytheon Road.

They will play the seventh-seeded squad of Riley Newman and Jay DeVilliers - who advanced with a 5-11, 11-4, 11-1 victory over Donald Young and Chattanooga, Tennessee, native Eric Roddy - in today's semifinals.

Sixth-seeded Jaume Martinez Vich and Matt Wright will play the 11th-seeded pairing of Tyson McGuffin and Max Freeman in the other semi.

Martinez Vich and Wright stunned second-seeded Frederico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin 7-11, 12-10, 11-9, while the McGuffin-Freeman team shocked No. 3 J.W. Johnson and Andrew Daescu 9-11, 11-9, 11-9 in a thrilling contest.

In the women's pro doubles competition, the top four seeds are all in today's semifinals after winning their quarterfinal matches in straight sets.

The semifinals in all the pro events will be held Saturday with the championship matches on Sunday.
