MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated metro Atlanta resident.
According to a news release, DPH is working to find anyone who may have come in contact with the person between January 19 and 24.
This is the first reported measles case in Georgia in 2025. DPH is reminding citizens that measles is very contagious and spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours.
DPH recommends that people get the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, with more than 95% of the people who receive a single dose developing immunity to all three viruses. A second dose boosts protection to 98%.
People with symptoms of measles should contact their healthcare provider immediately. Avoid any visit to a healthcare facility without contacting them about symptoms first.
