Surveillance video released of suspect in fatal stabbing of bicyclist at east Houston trail

The Houston Police Department has released surveillance video of a suspect involved in the fatal stabbing of a bicyclist at a east Houston trail early Thursday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the Harrisburg Hike & Bike Trail, located at 123 N. Drennan St., at 5:55 a.m.

Police said the 77-year-old man was riding his bike to work on the nearby bike trail when the suspect came out from behind a fence and stabbed him. Despite his injuries, he managed to ride his bike to his job just down the street and told his coworkers what happened. They immediately called 911.

First responders met the man outside The Spencer Company at 123 N. Drennan Street and transported him to the hospital, where he later died.

Detectives, working with Metro Police Department, identified a suspect that was seen boarding a metro transit shortly after the incident.

Councilman Mario Castillo identified the victim as Anival Patricio Elvir Ortiz.

"My thoughts are with the victim's family, friends, and all those affected by this devastating loss," Castillo stated in a release.
