A generator fire at Glen Cove Hospital on Tuesday caused 11 people to be moved from its emergency room to another section of the facility, an official said.
One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation, said Philip Grella Jr., chief of the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department. There were no other injuries, according to Miriam Sholder, a hospital spokeswoman.
Grella said firefighters received a call for the fire at 101 St. Andrews Lane at 1:48 p.m. and were on the scene three minutes later. A total of seven departments responded, and the fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes, he said.
The 235-bed hospital was conducting routine generator testing when a fire broke out and spread to the ceiling of the emergency room, Grella said.
"The roofline was burning in between the ceiling," Grella said in a phone interview.
"The hospital relocated 11 people from the emergency room into another part of the hospital," he said. It was not immediately clear if those people were moved back after the response.
Sholder said there was no impact to any patients.
Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro said in a release the fire is not considered suspicious and originated from a generator exhaust pipe that overheated, causing insulation to catch fire. There was "no serious damage" to the hospital, he said.
Glen Cove Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck went to the scene and said during a phone interview that the city's volunteer department "responded immediately," adding, "everything was taken care of quite rapidly."
