'An honour' - Bristol Rovers captain Alfie Kilgour reacts to being named Gas player of the month | Bristol Live

Alfie Kilgour has thanked the support of Bristol Rovers supporters after the Gas captain was named the club's player of the month for August.

The defender has made an outstanding start to his second spell in blue-and-white quarters following his summer move from Mansfield Town, playing every minute of Rovers' seven league games so far. He also played a key role in helping the Gas secure three consecutive clean sheets in the league for the first time in three-and-a-half years.

Following his return to north Bristol, the 27-year-old was named the club's new captain ahead of the start of the season.

"It feels brilliant to be named the player of the month," Kilgour told club media. "Obviously, it's nice to get a little bit of recognition, but ultimately, it's a team effort as always. There are 11 lads on the pitch and the subs coming on and off, but it's an honour and long may it continue, so thank you to those who voted.

"They [the supporters] support us through good times and bad. We had a bit of a tough time at the start of the month, and we came good towards the end. So, it's lovely and it's nice that they've got my back and they support me. Ultimately, I give 110 per cent no matter what."

After a slow start which saw Darrell Clarke's side lose their opening three league matches as well as being knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the first round stage by Cambridge United, Rovers have gone five games unbeaten across all competitions with 10 points from 12 in League Two alongside a crazy 4-4 draw against Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s in the EFL Trophy.

Their run of clean sheets was ended last Saturday as Newport County scored two consolation goals in the Gas' 3-2 win at Rodney Parade, but the victory was Rovers' third in a row.

"Clean sheets is ultimately why me, Kacper [Lopata], Taylor [Moore], Clint [Mola] come on," Kilgour continued. "Luke [Southwood] as well. We try to keep clean sheets so it gives the more attacking lads a chance to win the game for us. Clean sheets was a massive thing that we wanted and the gaffer was big on. Clean sheets are important and three at the back end of the month was good and I'm delighted with it.

"It was a long time since the club last won three league games in a row so that was nice to get our monkey off our back and we move forward from there."
