It surely took longer than he expected, but Chase Illig finally got his first win as a professional manager, and it came via a no-hitter.

The former Tazewell High School baseball player piloted the rookie-level Florida Complex League Red Sox to a 9-0 victory over the FCL Pirates on Thursday in Fort Myers.

Boston prospects Denison Sanchez, Wuilliams Rodriguez and Nicolas De La Cruz combined to pitch the seven-inning no-no with 13 strikeouts and five walks.

Meanwhile, Avinson Pinto had two hits to lead the Sox at the plate.

Illig played the first three seasons of his high school career for the Tazewell Bulldogs prior to transferring to IMG Academy in Florida for his senior season in 2015.

After a standout career as a catcher at West Virginia University, he spent three seasons as a farmhand in the New York Yankees minor league system.

He is in his third year working in the player development department in Boston's organization. Illig coached with the Low-A Salem Red Sox in 2023 and with both the High-A Greenville Drive and FCL Red Sox in 2024.

He had dropped his first seven games as a skipper this season, but his team prevailed on Thursday to provide him win No. 1.
