Mike Powell, long jump world record holder, suspended from athletics after safeguarding violation

Long jump world-record holder Mike Powell has been suspended from athletics after a safeguarding order violation.

The 61-year-old had been coaching women's track and field at Azusa Pacific University in the United States since joining in autumn 2022, but left in spring of 2024.

As per an update on the Athletics Integrity Unit website, he has been suspended from all activities in the sport including World Athletics-sanctioned activities and will not be accredited for any competitions or events that are organised or sanctioned by the sport's governing body.

Powell is also banned from attending any World Athletics series events. The order is appealable.

Powell is one of long jump's most decorated athletes. He won two Olympic silver medals, in 1988 and 1992, and golds in two World Championships.

No one has jumped further than his 8.95 meter jump in the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, where he broke Bob Beamon's 8.90m record from 1968.

The American also coached at the Academy of Speed in Rancho Cucamonga, California, before arriving at Azusa, where he was a part-time coach for the 2023 season.
