As Jamaica prepares for the upcoming general election, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz has issued a strong appeal to all Jamaicans to observe road traffic laws and help prevent accidents during the election period.
In a statement on social media, Minister Vaz emphasized the importance of road safety amid the intensifying campaigns. "As Transport Minister I make an appeal to all Jamaicans, that as the election date is about to be announced and as the campaigns are about to intensify, to observe the road traffic laws to prevent and minimize any traffic accidents that can cause fatalities and injuries," he said.
The Minister also announced that the police will adopt a zero-tolerance approach during the election period. He urged leadership within both major political parties to monitor and caution their supporters to minimize incidents on the roads.
Prime Minister and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader Dr. Andrew Holness confirmed that the date for the next general election will be announced today at a mass rally in Half-Way Tree, St. Andrew. The announcement was confirmed during a Central Executive meeting on Saturday, with thousands expected to attend the rally.
To reduce congestion during today's activities, Vaz noted that all hired Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses will drop off passengers at Half-Way Tree and then move to the National Stadium as a holding area until the conclusion of the mass rally. Supporters are advised to take note of their bus numbers to return on the same buses after the event.
