People traffickers set to be sentenced after being intercepted

Sentencing has been delayed for two Ukrainian nationals who admitted trafficking migrants into the UK on a yacht.

Vladyslav Cherniavskyi, 37, and Oleksandr Yavtushenko, 43, appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court after pleading guilty to three counts of assisting unlawful immigration.

The pair were arrested on July 20 when their vessel was stopped in a joint operation involving the National Crime Agency (NCA), Border Force, and French authorities.

The yacht was escorted into Gosport Marina following the interception off the Isle of Wight's coast.

According to the NCA, four migrants on board - three Albanian men and a Vietnamese woman - were handed over to immigration officials.

The court heard the two defendants had made more than one smuggling trip.

Prosecutor Robin Leach told the court that each migrant had paid 12,000 euros (around £10,500) for passage to the UK.

While the total sums were clear, the exact financial gain for the defendants was not, the court heard.

Mr Leach said the smuggling network appeared to operate under a hierarchy, with organisers likely taking a substantial share of profits.

However, the court heard evidence suggesting the defendants did profit from their involvement.

Cherniavskyi is said to have purchased the yacht used in the operation, while Yavtushenko reportedly paid 12,000 euros for dental treatment in Poland.

Mr Leach added that a report from French authorities contained "no evidence" that either man had been coerced.

Judge Daniel Sawyer stated that further evidence would be required before sentencing could take place.

The case was adjourned for a Newton hearing, which will determine how much money the men made from the crossings and whether they acted under any degree of coercion.

A new court date is yet to be set.

Both defendants, assisted by a Russian interpreter throughout proceedings, were remanded in custody.
