Parts of UK set for Christmas Day snow with temperatures dropping to -4C - Birmingham Live

Parts of the UK could be in for a highly anticipated white Christmas this year, as snow is expected to fall in Scotland and North East England.

The previous widespread white Christmas in the UK was in 2010, with snow on the ground at 83% of stations, reports Express.co.uk.

Snow arriving somewhere in the UK - even just one flake - happens more often, with 2023 seeing snow at 11% of stations, making it the last official white Christmas by that definition.

This year could prove to be similar as new maps by WXCHARTS, which uses MetDesk data, have shown snow on Christmas Day, from 6am to 12pm.

In the morning, snow is anticipated across the Scottish Highlands and Glasgow, while in England it could hit Newcastle and Yorkshire.

Surprisingly, it could also move down south, reaching Essex and Bedfordshire.

It's also due to be a pretty chilly Christmas Day across the UK, with temperatures falling to -4C in parts of the Scottish Highlands.

England, however, is due to be slightly milder, dropping to 3C in London and the South East.

Separately, the Met Office forecast for December 16 to 25 states: "Unsettled at first with spells of rain affecting the UK at times.

"Some heavy rain is possible anywhere, but it is likely to be heaviest and most persistent in the west and northwest, with sheltered parts of the east and southeast typically drier.

"Any snow will probably be confined to high ground in the north.

"Strong winds are possible at times with a risk of gales, especially along coasts and over higher ground.

"Temperatures are likely to be above normal overall.

"Later in the period, conditions may start to become a little more settled, with rainfall amounts decreasing and drier weather becoming more prevalent, especially in the south.

"This may mean an increasing amount of overnight fog and frost."
