Indiana Gov. Mike Braun orders state law enforcement cooperate with ICE

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) -- Indiana Gov. Mike Braun on Tuesday said all law enforcement agencies in the state will be required to work with Immigration Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

In the executive order signed Tuesday, Braun says agencies are "directed to fully cooperate with ICE, and, to the maximum extent permitted, enter into agreements under 8 U.S.C. 1357(g) with the United States Government."

This comes after Pres. Donald Trump's executive order on "Securing Our Borders," filed Jan. 20 address "the disastrous effects of unlawful mass migration and resettlement."

The governor says this order falls in line with Pres. Trump's order, stating it is "(his) duty to take care that the laws are faithfully executed and to ensure the safety and security of Hoosiers, and (he) intends to carry out these duties while fully cooperating with these Federal immigration policies."

According to Braun's order, state law enforcement groups will be required to work with ICE and report credible evidence of "illegal aliens" to the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center if the person:

The order applies to every level of law enforcement, including city and county specific agencies, Indiana State Police, and the law enforcement divisions of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Department of Corrections, and the Indiana Gaming Commission.

The Indiana National Guard will also be asked to cooperate with requests by Indiana Department of Homeland Security when related to immigration.
