First snowman of the season built in Scotland as Arctic blast brings winter joy - Daily Record

The first snowman of the winter has been built at Cairngorm Mountain ski resort.

Sporting a hat, scarf and classic carrot nose, the cheerful creation was assembled outside the Ptarmigan restaurant.

Sharing a video on Facebook, the resort declared: "Here's hoping it's the first of many! Come take a trip on the Mountain Railway to say hi - we'll see you on the terrace for a snowball fight".

The clip was accompanied by Michael Buble's rendition of Walking in a Winter Wonderland.

Temperatures nationwide have dropped dramatically, with wintry downpours turning to snow across elevated areas, reports the Scottish Daily Express.

The bitter conditions arrive alongside the conclusion of British Summer Time as clocks fall back at 2am on Sunday morning, meaning dusk will arrive an hour sooner.

An icy northerly current has been pulled down from the Arctic by Storm Benjamin, which is drifting away over the North Sea.

The tempest - christened by France's weather service - delivered destructive gales to southern England on Thursday.

Saturday's peak temperatures ranged between 8C and 11C, though the piercing wind made conditions feel up to 5C more bitter, particularly along Scotland's eastern coastline.

Cairngorm Mountain near Aviemore receives an average yearly snowfall of 23cm and typically experiences five days of snow, with the skiing period normally lasting from December through April. The latest weather update from the resort advised: "Please wrap up warm if you are planning to visit. Currently we have a cold Northerly wind. Cloud level 750 metres. Dusting of wet snow above 850 metres at the moment. Brighter spells appearing with cloud levels starting to lift.

"Today's forecast is- Snow showers and sunny periods. Wind North Westerly 40 to 45mph on the summit with a temperature of -4C and a windchill of -14C. At the Base Station the temperature will be 0C to +1C."

'We'll all feel cold'.

Sky TV's weather producer Kirsty McCabe gave an overview of the UK's weather, stating: "This is the first significant cold snap of the season, but we're not expecting much in the way of snow.

"The biting cold northerly winds are bringing Arctic air, so we'll all feel cold with a significant wind chill, but the showers will be focused on windward coasts and hills. Any wintry showers of sleet or snow will tend to be over the mountain tops, above 400 metres or so."

Meanwhile, Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Chris Bulmer added: "Although many areas will see dry weather with sunny spells, it will feel cold in the brisk northerly winds. Showers are expected in the north and west, some of these falling as snow over Scottish mountains."
