One allegedly targeted Jatiyo Chhatro Shokti convener, another near EC office
Two separate crude bomb-related incidents were reported in Dhaka last night -- one allegedly targeting Jatiyo Chhatro Shokti convener Abu Baker Mojumder, and another occurring near the Election Commission office, police and witnesses said.
Leaders and activists of Jatiyo Chhatro Shokti later staged a protest march in the capital, condemning the alleged attack on their convener.
Mazharul Islam, assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Ramna Zone), said around 40 to 50 individuals took part in the procession, which began at Bangla Motor and ended at Shahbagh.
"They alleged that a crude bomb was thrown at their convener, and we are currently investigating the matter," he told The Daily Star.
Earlier, Mojumder wrote on Facebook, "A short while ago, at around 8:23-8:24pm, a crude bomb was thrown in front of my bike at the Intercontinental intersection. I was heading to Rupayan Tower for an organisational meeting. Due to political reasons, I've made many enemies -- both external and internal. Alhamdulillah, I'm still safe. Please keep me in your prayers."
In a separate incident, police detained a suspect following an alleged crude bomb blast near the Election Commission office later that night.
Jahedul Islam Kabir, sub-inspector of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, said a 14-year-old boy was taken into custody from the scene around 11:00pm on suspicion of involvement.
