The future of Harley Quinn in James Gunn's newly rebooted DC Universe remains one of the biggest fan questions -- and Gunn just made clear we won't have to wonder forever. The co-head of DC Studios, who has been busy overhauling the onscreen DC world alongside Peter Safran, recently launched the first chapter of his plan with last month's Superman, which he wrote and directed. That film introduced a fresh David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, replaced the Justice League with a corporate Justice Gang, and set the stage for new versions of Batman and Wonder Woman (still to be cast, while Robert Pattinson will return for The Batman Part II).
But will Harley be recast as well, or could Margot Robbie once again bring her chaotic charm to the role? Gunn was careful not to give too much away when speaking on the red carpet for Peacemaker Season 2.
"That will be revealed down the line."
It's a short tease, but not without hope for fans who've seen Robbie's Harley Quinn steal the show in Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021). The actress last spoke about the character in 2021, noting that playing Harley back-to-back in Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad had left her "exhausted" and unsure of when she'd return -- but still intrigued to see where her story might go.
While he avoided confirming Harley's future, Gunn did name another Suicide Squad standout he's eager to bring back: Idris Elba's deadly marksman Bloodsport.
"I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out. So we'll see what happens."
How Would Harley Quinn and Bloodsport Return?
The timing could make sense. Next up in Gunn's revamped DC Universe is Peacemaker Season 2, premiering August 21 on HBO Max. The new season directly connects to The Suicide Squad, with Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. taking over A.R.G.U.S. and seeking revenge on John Cena's Peacemaker for killing his son, Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman). Both Harley and Bloodsport were close allies of Flag Jr. by the end of the film, making their inclusion in this revenge-driven storyline more than plausible.
Of course, Lady Gaga also played Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, but let's be real, we don't need to see that again. So let's hope Margot is waiting "down the line".
