Jucsu polls: National footballer Kiron secures highest votes to win

Kiron, 23, who polled 5,778 votes, the top tally in the election, could not cast his own ballot as he was in Malaysia for the AFC Futsal Asian Cup qualifiers

Bangladesh U-23 footballer Mahamudul Hasan Kiron has won the post of sports secretary in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (Jucsu) election, securing the highest number of votes among all candidates across all posts.

Kiron, 23, who polled 5,778 votes, the top tally in the election, could not cast his own ballot as he was in Malaysia for the AFC Futsal Asian Cup qualifiers.

His nearest rival, Shafiuzzaman of the Chhatra Shibir-backed panel, bagged 1,221 votes, while Chhatra Dal-backed candidate Uzzal Hasan Robin received 543.

A student of the Bangla department's 48th batch and a resident of AFM Kamaluddin Hall, Kiron currently plays for Rahmatganj MFS in the Bangladesh Premier League. He previously played for Bashundhara Kings, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and Arambagh Krira Sangha.

The results of the Jucsu election were announced yesterday (13 September), nearly 40 hours after counting began on Thursday.

Swatantra Shikkharthi Sammilon panel candidate Abdur Rashid Zitu was elected vice-president, while Shibir's Mazharul Islam secured the position of general secretary.

Zitu bagged 3,334 votes, while Mazharul secured 3,930.

In the race for assistant general secretary (male), Shibir's Ferdous Al Hasan won with 2,358 votes, and for the AGS (female) post, Shibir's Ayesha Siddika Meghla bagged 3,402 votes.

Voting in the Jucsu election took place on Thursday, with vote counting starting at around 10:30pm that day.
