CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) - Tennessee's Attorney General has joined a coalition of 38 states and territories urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration FDA) to take stronger action against counterfeit versions of popular weight loss and diabetes medications like Ozempic and Wegovy.
The demand comes as concerns grow over the rise of fake and potentially dangerous versions of these drugs, which are appearing online and in unauthorized locations, putting consumers at serious risk.
With the increasing popularity of injectable weight loss drugs, experts warn that many individuals seeking quick results may unknowingly turn to unreliable sources.
These fake versions may not only be ineffective but also pose significant health risks.
Madison Stanley, a nurse practitioner at Erlanger Metabolic and Bariatric, emphasizes the importance of obtaining medications through accredited pharmacies to ensure safety.
"Accreditation is their commitment to safety and quality of the medication," Stanley explained. "When patients get their prescriptions from licensed, accredited sources, they can trust the integrity of what they are putting into their bodies."
As concerns about counterfeit drugs grow, specialists are also reminding the public that sustainable weight loss comes from long-term lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes.
"I think exercise and eating healthy definitely go hand-in-hand," said Stanley. "Both need to be present for lasting results. What we like to focus on is a high-protein and low-carb diet. That seems to work best when combined with at least 150 minutes of exercise per week."
One commonly overlooked but highly effective form of exercise is walking.
"Walking is very underestimated," she noted. "Many of my patients are surprised when I recommend it, but it's a wonderful exercise. It doesn't have to be rigorous or involve lifting heavy weights in the gym. If walking is the best you can do, that's amazing. It gets your heart rate up, keeps you moving, and is an excellent way to stay active."
Experts stress that individuals should obtain prescription medications from a doctor or licensed pharmacy.
