WASHINGTON -- Broccoli sold at Walmart is being recalled due to listeria concerns in 20 states, including Washington and Idaho.
According to an alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Braga Fresh is voluntarily issuing a precautionary recall of a single production lot of washed and ready-to-eat 12-ounce Marketside Broccoli Florets, with a best-if-used-by date of Dec. 10, 2024.
The FDA said the advisory was initiated due to the possibility of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The potential contamination was discovered during random sampling by Texas Health and Human Services at a Texas store, where one of multiple samples tested positive.
The FDA said there have been no reported cases of illness linked to the recall.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. In pregnant women, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
