The incident has sparked an urgent warning to residents across the city.

The issue is said to be a "great concern" in Glasgow.

The local authority praised the efforts of the workers who helped to minimise the impact of the blaze.

A GCC spokesperson said: "This is another example of the risks posed by disposing of batteries and other hazardous items within household bins.

"It's an issue that's causing great concern in Glasgow and throughout the waste industry in the UK as a whole.

"Batteries and other forms of hazardous waste, such as vapes, pressurised cannisters and other electrical equipment, should never be disposed of in a household bin.

"Residents should always recycle their hazardous waste at their local recycling centre. Household batteries can also be recycled in a wide range of places, such as supermarkets, retail outlets and other public buildings.

"Putting batteries into household waste puts refuse collectors at risk but can also disrupt the wider waste management system.

"In the incident in Farnell Street, staff followed the correct safety procedures and this helped to minimise the impact of the incident.

"No one was injured as a consequence of the fire, and no damage was sustained by the vehicle.

"We will continue to monitor this issue very closely to keep our staff and facilities as safe as possible."
