'The Handmaid's Tale' Sequel Just Cast a Major Leading Role

The sequel to The Handmaid's Tale -- Hulu's popular and award-winning series based on the Margaret Atwood novel -- continues to beef up its main cast. The series, titled The Testaments (like the book on which it is based), recently began shoring up its main team, bringing Chase Infiniti on board to play one of the three main roles, and confirming the return of Ann Dowd's Aunt Lydia. But now we finally know who will be the third woman to join the fold: and that honor belongs to actress Lucy Halliday.

Halliday -- who co-starred in the acclaimed 2022 independent film Blue Jean -- will tackle the role of Daisy, one of the three co-leads, alongside Dowd's Lydia and Infinit's Agnes. The story takes place approximately fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, where the last gasps of Gilead are currently being felt and still wreaking havoc on the populace of what once was America. According to an official synopsis of the book, "the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results" in The Testaments.

Lucy Halliday's Daisy Plays A Major Role In Gilead's Next Chapter Close

Told from the perspective of three very different women, The Testaments has been created for television by Bruce Miller, who will also serve as showrunner -- the same roles he had on the original series. As far as we know, the series will follow a similar template to that of the novel, focusing on three seemingly disparate and disconnected women, as their lives intersect in an explosive and unexpected fashion.

According to the report from Deadline, Halliday's Daisy is "a young Canadian teen, whose life is turned upside down when she learns of her connection to the Republic of Gilead."

Infiniti and Halliday's characters will be of particular interest to fans of the original series/novel, as they -- and, again, this is a major spoiler, so please navigate away from this page now if you don't want to have these reveals ruined for you -- are long suspected to be the two children of Elisabeth Moss's June/Offred. Infiniti's Agnes is believed to be her daughter with husband Luke, whereas Halliday's Daisy is Baby Nicole, a.k.a. the child Offred and Nick conceived during their love affair. Though many of these aspects of the story are not confirmed in the novels, they have been made text/confirmed in the Hulu series adaptation.

Halliday -- who recently wrapped production on James McAvoy's directorial debut in Scotland -- shared the news on her own Instagram with the caption "off to gilead I go" adding that "daisy (!!!!!) is one seriously cool mf."

Given the prescience of The Handmaid's Tale story in relation to the current state of America, it's nice to know that we will be getting more of the story ahead of that first series' final season premiere on April 8, 2025. How true to life it will all turn out to be is anyone's guess.
