ST. LOUIS -- A man died after his car hit a city trash truck head-on Thursday morning in north St. Louis, authorities said.
The two-vehicle crash was about 10:20 a.m. at West Florissant and Arlington avenues.
The man who died was driving a car on West Florissant, crossed the center line and hit the oncoming trash truck, police said.
The driver of the trash truck was a veteran employee, said police Lt. Adam Duke.
The trash truck's driver tried to steer out of the car's way but overcorrected and the truck flipped onto its side, police said. The truck's driver suffered minor injuries.
The police department's accident-reconstruction team is handling the investigation. Police don't know if speed was a factor in Thursday's crash; that will be one of the elements investigators look at.

Police haven't yet released the name of the man who died.
The intersection is near where Shirley Howard, 39, was fatally struck by a car Jan. 20 as she pushed a stroller. Her 2-year-old son, Amir Atkins, was in the stroller and critically hurt.
Police said Howard was in the bike lane likely due to ice-covered sidewalks. The sedan that struck her was driven by an 80-year-old man. He was traveling east on West Florissant when his car started to veer into the bike lane, hitting the woman and child. His car then crashed through the snowbank and into a house, police said.
The driver stayed at the scene and was cooperating with police. His name was not released.
