First live acts announced for Newport Christmas celebrations

The first live acts for Newport's Countdown to Christmas have been revealed.

The festivities, organised by Newport Now BID, will take place on Saturday, November 15, from 2pm to 5.30pm.

The event will feature live music, fairground rides, and celebrity guests, finishing with the switching on of Newport's city centre Christmas lights and a fireworks display.

The main support acts have been announced as three rising stars of Welsh music: MACY, Josh Hicks, and Xempa, who will perform at the junction of Charles Street and Commercial Street.

MACY, known for her feel-good pop anthems, has been performing since her debut single, Cinema, in 2020, and has played at The Principality Stadium, the BAFTA Cymru Awards, and FOCUS Wales.

She also made her international debut at the M for Montreal Festival in Canada in 2024 and has had airplay on BBC Radio 1.

Josh Hicks, a double winner at Newport City Radio's Love Live Music Awards, will bring his soulful performances to the stage. He will play a mix of covers and original songs.

Xempa, a band from Newport and Cwmbran, will showcase their blend of soul, hip hop, and spoken word.

The headline star, a multi-million selling chart-topper and TV star with three UK number one singles, will be announced on Friday, November 7.

The cast of Rapunzel, this year's pantomime at Newport's Riverfront Theatre, and Santa will also make appearances.

The Countdown to Christmas is organised by Newport Now BID in partnership with Newport City Council, Friars Walk, and Newport City Radio.

This year's event is funded by the UK Government via the Shared Prosperity Fund.

Last year's event attracted almost 12,000 additional people into the city centre compared to an average Saturday.

The day will also mark the start of free parking on Saturdays in council-owned car parks in the city centre, which will run until December 27.

The headline musical act will be announced on Friday, November 7, and they will assist the city's mayor, Councillor Kate Thomas, in switching on the city centre Christmas lights.

The event will conclude with the Christmas lights switch-on at 5.15pm, followed by the fireworks display at 5.30pm.
